A Brief Synopsis
It’s shortly before Christmas Eve and The Daughters of the Lone Star State are having their annual meeting. The old group is dying out, literally, and the Daughters are determined to find new members. However, when the elite ladies of Lowake, Texas, meet the wrong side of the tracks, all hell breaks loose! This funny but biting play is a “Grade A comedy with a punch.”
Characters
Mildred Keifner, 60’s, self-appointed local singing star
Liddy Bell Cartwright, 60’s, the president, opinionated, domineering
Clara Bell Ivey, 60’s Liddy Bell’s sister the ultimate follower
Darlene Parsons, late 50’s, selfish, wounded, rich, a functional alcoholic
Lola Faye Barnes, late 50’s, former white trash, willing to serve
Lois Wheelis, 70’s, charter member, cranky, speaks her mind
Cookie Hawkins, 80, the founder, Darlene’s mother, senile
Ima Jean Winkler-Gomez, early 20’s, white trash, needs to belong
Vergie Hopkins, late 50’s, loud, tough, stirs things up
Doll Johnson, 60’s, Darlene’s black maid, strong, but knows her place
Sharon Johnson, 30’s, Doll’s daughter, bold, angry, has had enough
Author’s Note: These people are real, not cartoons. It’s easy to go for the laughs, it’s harder to strive for the truth.
The Setting
The entire action of the play takes place in the fellowship hall of the First Baptist Church, Lowake (pronounced Lo-way-kee), Texas.
The Time
The evening of December 23, 1992.
First Annual SLOLT Short Play Festival
Audition Notice
SEPTEMBER 15, 16 & 17 at 6.30 pm
at the SLO Little Theatre
The festival will present 10 plays from playwrights across the country, as well as a number of plays from local young playwrights. Sides will be available at the theatre box office on September 6th. Since the plays are only 10 pages long, actors will be double/triple cast.
All actors are required to attend a photo shoot on September 18th at 6 pm. Rehearsals begin October 3rd.
The festival runs from Friday, October 17 - 26th.
Festival Director Cornelia Drese will join us from Germany, where she has spent more than a decade on the German Broadway stage as well as artistically directing one of Germany’s largest Broadway theatre houses. Connie is looking forward to working with our local actors and exploring new material by American playwrights. It's going to be am amazing experience!
Connie will be assisted by Adrian Balboutin who recently completed a directing internship at PCPA and directed our 2007 Holiday Readers' Theatre production of "Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol". Adrian is also directing Doubt at the Pewter Plough this Fall.
Please be aware that this will be a very short & intense rehearsal schedule. We only have a little over 2 weeks to get the festival plays up, so all actors will be expected to attend nightly rehearsals and, depending upon your availability, day-time rehearsals.
The festival is about focusing on the writing and acting, so this is a perfect opportunity for our serious local actors to come out and experience the process with a European director.
